Friedens Community Ministries is beginning a search for a new Executive Director. We are asking you and others in the Milwaukee non-profit community for help in trying to identify potential candidates for this position.

Friedens Community Ministries is a non-profit organization whose mission is to maintain a food pantry and distribute food to those in need. Friedens also develops programs and services to meet the needs and improve the quality of life for the disadvantaged in our service area.

The ministry is supported by the Southeast Wisconsin Association of the United Church of Christ, by several Roman Catholic parishes, by other local denominations, by generous individuals, and by many non-profit agencies in the Milwaukee area. Friedens Community Ministries receives support from the United Way of Greater Milwaukee.

The Director’s main responsibility is for management and continuing development of our two food pantries at the Coggs Center and at Fletcher Elementary School. The Coggs Center pantry provides emergency food supplies to over 2,000 people each month. These are individuals and families who were not able to immediately get food stamps. They are encouraged to visit the pantry for an emergency three-day supply of food. The Fletcher Pantry serves people from the neighborhood on the northwest side of the city.

Essential Responsibilities:

  1. Distributes food and maintains the food supply
  2. Administers the programs of the pantry and keeps records
  3. Manages the pantry staff (2-3 people)
  4. Recruits, trains, and supervises volunteers
  5. Networks with other food related agencies and organizations
  6. Develops support services with churches and other organizations
  7. Prepares & manages the Friedens’ budget and manages the daily financial affairs
  8. Prepares monthly reports and attends board and committee meetings
  9. Researches and writes grant requests, reports and fund raising letters
  10. Maintains mailing list and donor records and writes thank you letters
  11. Responsible for publishing a semi-annual newsletter, in conjunction with board members

Qualifications:

  1. Prefer Bachelor's degree, especially in the human services field, with experience in nonprofit social service agency
  2. Committed to helping clients meet their nutritional needs
  3. Possesses excellent communication skills, including both speaking and writing
  4. Able to relate comfortably with diverse people who work at and use our services
  5. Has some experience and familiarity with food and basic nutrition
  6. Possesses a valid Wisconsin driver's license, and has a good driving record
  7. Able to build working relationships and connections with support organizations
  8. Able to drive a van to pick up food supplies

Physical Demands:

  1. Able to lift 50 lbs
  2. Able to climb stairs
  3. Able to ambulate without the aid of assistive device

This position will be available beginning no later than March 1, 2008. The Friedens Board would like the new Executive Director to make an informal agreement to stay in the position for a minimum of three years.
